Seven starting points, three targets. "Days until Monday" is included because for shift workers and students the more urgent number is often how much freedom is left, not how much waiting.

Two columns use deliberately different conventions, and it is worth knowing which is which. The weekend columns answer "is it here yet", so on a Saturday the Saturday column reads today rather than 0 or 7 — you are standing in the thing you were counting to. The Monday column answers the opposite question, "when does it end", so from Monday to the next Monday is 7 days, not 0. The other row worth a second look is Saturday → Sunday: just 1 day, which is the whole reason a two-day weekend feels shorter than it looks on paper.
Worked example: Monday morning maths
It is 9 a.m. on Monday. Saturday is 5 calendar days away, which the live timer renders as 4 days and 15 hours until midnight at the start of Saturday — 15 hours left of Monday plus four whole days. If your weekend really begins when work ends on Friday at 5 p.m., that is 4 days and 8 hours from Monday 9 a.m., or 104 hours. And the working stretch itself is 5 workdays: Monday through Friday inclusive. Three different honest answers to "how long until the weekend", which is exactly why the tool shows the calendar-day count and the ticking timer separately instead of blending them into one fuzzy number.
Worked example: how much of the year is weekend?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so it contains 104 or 105 weekend days — 104 in most years, 105 when January 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday. A leap year (366 days = 52 weeks + 2 days) can reach 106, which happens only when it begins on a Saturday, giving 53 Saturdays and 53 Sundays. Put differently, weekends occupy roughly 28.5% of the calendar (104 ÷ 365), and the 261-or-so remaining weekdays are what every "days until" countdown on this site is really measured against.
The weekend is not the same two days everywhere
Saturday–Sunday is the most widespread pattern, but it is a convention rather than a law of the calendar. Much of the Middle East and North Africa has historically used a Friday–Saturday weekend, anchored to Friday congregational prayers; Iran and Afghanistan have used a single-day or Thursday–Friday arrangement. The pattern also moves: the United Arab Emirates shifted its public-sector working week to a Saturday–Sunday weekend, with Friday a half day, at the start of 2022, explicitly to align with international markets. Israel's weekend runs Friday–Saturday, with Sunday a normal working day. If your weekend is not Saturday–Sunday, put the exact date of your next day off into the main calculator — it counts to whatever date you give it.
Why "the weekend" resists a simple formula
Fixed holidays like Christmas are pure subtraction: a date minus a date. Weekday targets are modular arithmetic instead — you divide the gap by seven and keep the remainder, which is why the answer never exceeds 6 and why it resets rather than grows.
