How the fourth-Thursday rule works

Since a 1941 act of Congress, US Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. That pins it to a seven-day window: the earliest possible date is November 22 (when November begins on a Thursday) and the latest is November 28 (when November begins on a Friday). Computing it is mechanical: find November 1's weekday, walk forward to the first Thursday, then add three more weeks.

Worked example

Take a year in which November 1 is a Sunday — 2026 is one. The first Thursday is November 5 (Sunday + 4 days), and adding 21 days gives Thursday, November 26, 2026. The same three steps work for any year, and they are exactly what this page's countdown runs in your browser — which is why it never needs a hardcoded date.

Every date above is generated by the fourth-Thursday rule, not typed in by hand. The last column explains why some holiday shopping seasons feel rushed: the run from Thanksgiving to Christmas swings between 27 days (a November 28 Thanksgiving) and 33 days (a November 22 one) — a difference of nearly a full week of shopping days from one year to the next.

Fun context: the floating feast

Thanksgiving is the anchor for a small fleet of floating dates. Black Friday is simply the day after; Cyber Monday the Monday after that. Canada holds its Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October — the same nth-weekday arithmetic with different parameters, and a reminder that "days until Thanksgiving" needs a country attached. Before 1941 the convention was the last Thursday of November, which matters in five-Thursday Novembers: the fourth and last Thursday differ by a week, and the 1941 law settled precisely that ambiguity.
