Reading the countdown
The big number is exclusive calendar days: on December 22 it reads "3 days", and on Christmas Day itself it says today rather than 0. The ticking timer underneath measures the exact time to midnight at the start of December 25 in your own time zone. If Christmas has already passed this year, the tool automatically counts to next year's — the target year is never hardcoded into the page.
Worked example: planning backwards from December 25
Suppose today is October 31 — Halloween. November contributes 30 days and December 25 more, so Christmas is exactly 55 days away (7 weeks and 6 days). That figure is the same every single year, because no leap day can fall between October 31 and December 25. If you prefer round numbers: standing on December 1, you have 24 days left — and an Advent calendar's 24 doors are precisely that count, December 1 through December 24.
Fun context: the season around the day
Christmas anchors a whole cluster of dates. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, which can land anywhere from November 27 to December 3 — that is why Advent's length changes each year while an Advent calendar always starts December 1. After the day itself come the "Twelve Days of Christmas": counted inclusively from December 25, the twelfth day is January 5, with Epiphany on January 6. That inclusive count is a nice example of why this site's calculator states its counting rule: exclusive counting says January 5 is 11 days after Christmas, yet tradition calls it the twelfth day because it counts Christmas Day as day one. Meanwhile, churches that still follow the Julian calendar celebrate Christmas on January 7 of the Gregorian calendar — the two calendars are currently 13 days apart.
