Two definitions, both legitimate
Meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere runs June 1 to August 31. National weather services use it because whole calendar months make temperature records easy to compare year on year; it never drifts, so "days until summer" under this definition is plain subtraction. Astronomical summer begins at the June solstice — the moment the Sun reaches its northernmost point — and runs to the September equinox. That instant is set by orbital mechanics, not the calendar, so its date wobbles.
Why the wobble? The tropical year is roughly 365.2422 days, about a quarter-day longer than a 365-day calendar year. Each common year the solstice therefore arrives roughly 5 hours 49 minutes later by the clock, and each leap day snaps it back about 18 hours 11 minutes. Repeat that sawtooth and the instant oscillates across the boundary between June 20 and June 21 — which is exactly why no honest page can print one fixed solstice date and call it exact. This table is generated by the same library that runs the countdown above, using a non-leap-year reference cycle so every row is comparable. Add one day to any span that crosses a February 29.

Rows from July onward count forward to next year's summer, which is why they jump past 300 — the same roll-over the calculator performs automatically once a date has passed.
Worked example: New Year's Day to the solstice
From January 1 to June 21 is 171 days in a common year and 172 in a leap year, since February 29 falls inside the span. As weeks that is 24 weeks and 3 days; as calendar months, 5 months and 20 days. Shift the target to June 20 and every figure drops by exactly one — a clean demonstration of how much the solstice approximation is actually worth: one day, no more.
Worked example: spring is 93 days long
The March equinox falls on March 19, 20 or 21. Taking March 20 and June 21 as representative dates, astronomical spring is 93 days — and remarkably, that count is the same in leap years, because both endpoints sit after February 29, so the leap day shifts them together. Meteorological seasons are tidier still: spring (March 1 – May 31) is 92 days inclusive, and meteorological summer (June 1 – August 31) is also 92 days, being 30 + 31 + 31. Astronomical summer, solstice to equinox, runs a shade longer at roughly 93–94 days, because Earth moves slowest along its orbit near its July aphelion.
Summer is a hemisphere, not a month
Everything above describes the Northern Hemisphere. South of the equator the seasons invert: the June solstice is the shortest day and marks the start of winter, while Southern summer begins at the December solstice — around December 21 or 22 — or on December 1 by the meteorological definition. Australians counting down to summer are therefore watching the run-up to Christmas, which lands squarely inside their summer holidays. Closer to the equator the whole framing weakens: many tropical regions organise the year around wet and dry seasons instead, and the solstice passes with barely a change in day length.
