Worked example: three fixed approach routes
Valentine's Day is day 45 of every year — 31 days of January plus 14 — so from New Year's Day it is always 44 days away, leap year or not (February 29 comes later). From Christmas it is always 51 days: 7 to reach January 1, then the 44. And from Groundhog Day, February 2, it is a tidy 12 — if the groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter, spring would still be 30 days past Valentine's, since six weeks is 42 days.
The leap-year wrinkle
Distances to February 14 from any date after last February are stable. Distances from February 14 to anything in March or beyond stretch by one day in leap years, because February 29 slips into the gap. The table below shows it concretely: White Day — March 14, when Japan and Korea return the favours given on Valentine's — sits exactly four weeks (28 days) after Valentine's in a common year, but 29 days in 2028, 2032 and every other leap year. Gift planners with four-week lead times, take note.
Dates around Valentine's Day
| Observance | Date | Distance from Valentine’s |
|---|---|---|
| Groundhog Day (US/Canada) | February 2 | 12 days before |
| Valentine’s Day | February 14 | — |
| International Women’s Day | March 8 | +22 days (+23 in leap years) |
| White Day (Japan/Korea) | March 14 | +28 days (+29 in leap years) |
| St. Patrick’s Day | March 17 | +31 days (+32 in leap years) |
Every "+1 in leap years" in that table is the same single February 29 doing the work. This is the clearest illustration of a rule the main calculator applies silently: any day count that crosses the end of February depends on the year; any count that doesn't is eternal.
Fun context: a saint, then a card industry
The date honours St. Valentine, a third-century Roman figure whose feast was fixed on February 14. The romantic association came much later — famously in Chaucer's fourteenth-century poetry — and the industrial-scale card exchange later still. The one calendar-related certainty: unlike Easter or Thanksgiving, Valentine's never floats. February 14 is February 14, which makes its countdown pure subtraction.
Related countdowns
After February 14 the next big fixed marker is days until summer — the June solstice, 126–128 days later. Romantics who prefer weekly rhythms can watch days until Friday or days until the weekend instead. And for an anniversary countdown to your own date, the days until calculator makes a shareable link in two clicks.
